Sustainable pig production
In context of Precision Livestock Farming, pig farms equipped with sensors and cameras that monitor environmental parameters, pigs’ weight, feed intake and water usage are actually big data producers.
Research projects
Main research questionThe increasing maximum temperatures and the increasing number of days with elevated temperatures in Belgium can lead to heat stress in several animal species but pigs are particularly sensitive to this. In recent years, pig farmers have experienced much greater production losses and mortality on their farms.

Research projects
Main research questionThe main objective of this project is to demonstrate that European protein sources can be used as feed ingredients for pig and poultry feeds and that this can lead to profitable production.

Co-creation opportunities in pig production
Research projects
Main research questionPIGWEB is a European project that was launched on March 1, 2021. This five-year project gathers 16 partners, including ILVO, from nine different countries with the core aim of strengthening the pig research infrastructures community.

Research projects
Main research questionThis European research project aims to improve animal welfare in pigs and poultry that are raised organically and in free-range systems. In concrete terms, the 23 project partners will work together on innovative solutions and tools.

Main research questionCan we extract the crude protein from the leguminous plants alfalfa (lucerne) and red clover, which are both green fodder crops with well known cultivation techniques, in order to mix that protein into the rations of (organic) pigs and poultry? We are answering this question in the LUZEX project.

Research projects
Main research questionWhich practical and affordable measures and strategies can pig farmers use to know and improve the feed conversion ratio in the future? Ugent and ILVO researchers looked for answers in this research project.
