Winner of organic agriculture and agroecology thesis award: student develops robot for labor-intensive tasks on small-scale farms together with farmers
UGent student Rembrandt Perneel won, with the development of a (semi) autonomous, modular robotic platform that can be used for weed control on small-scale farms and thus play a supporting role in performing labor-intensive tasks.
Main research questionHow can robot milking be combined with grazing, taking the changing climate circumstances and a profitable business model into account? This central research question is being answered in the WEIDEWIJS project.
Main research questionCan a multi-purpose, modular, semi-autonomous, electrically powered robotic platform for various agricultural tasks be developed in a feasible and attractive way for small and medium-sized farms striving to adopt more sustainable practices? The action-oriented answer lies in the CIMAT interreg research project.
Relevance/ValorizationThe Garden 5.0 project built mission-driven STEM pathways where the positive impact of digitization and innovating with key technologies such as photonics, robotics, biotechnology and AI are very important. The pathways were written down in handy sheets so that the activities can be repeated elsewhere.
In Greece, an experiment is deploying eHealth robots to help rural elderly people as caregivers and companions. In the Scilly Isles in the UK, they are organizing a trial of balloons and drones to provide 5G coverage.
Using open-source use of intelligent sensors, robotics, AI and big data, we aim to create new forms of urban agro-production for a local, resilient and fair food system.Research approachAction learning takes center stage. The STEM & VORK project offers two linked trajectories that build on a series of introductory workshops.
